Crime Stoppers Essentials

New Cases

History

Crime Stoppers began in 1976 in Albuquerque, New Mexico with a reenactment of the murder of a gas station attendant. The local media publicized the crime and an offer of a reward. Anonymous tips led to the solving of the crime.

There are over 1,200 individual Crime Stoppers organizations in more than 24 countries. These Crime Stoppers chapters have been responsible for clearing 1.1 million cases and recovering 8 billion dollars in property and illicit drugs. Rewards totaling more than 76 million dollars have been paid.

Each Crime Stoppers program is administered by a board of directors who approve rewards, raise funds, and promote the program.  Crime Stoppers' success is dependent on a 3-way partnership between citizens, local media, and police.

Crime Stoppers International and Crime Stoppers USA were founded in order to provide legal advice, organizational assistance, and training to member organizations.

About Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana

Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana began in 1985 under the coordination of the Indianapolis Police Department and is administered by a private board of directors.

Our mission is to profile selected felony crimes and fugitives through a variety of local media partners and accept information on any felony crime or fugitive. We forward the information to the appropriate law enforcement agency for investigation. Rewards are based on various factors of the crime.

We treat our callers in a confidential and professional manner. We guarantee anonymity by never asking for or taking your name. We know you only by your assigned code number.

Through July 2007, tips to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana have led to the arrest of 3,700 felony suspects and the recovery of over 4 million dollars in property and illicit drugs. Rewards of more than $700,000 have been paid. All reward funds are donated by our board of directors aided by local business and concerned citizens, no tax dollars are used.

Along with the Indianapolis/Marion County area, we offer our services to the following Central Indiana counties: Bartholomew, Boone, Brown, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Howard, Jackson, Johnson, Lawrence, Monroe, Morgan, Putnam, and Shelby.
